    Adding and editing menu items

Create dishes with prices, photos, dietary tags, and options like sizes and extras — and control exactly what guests see, item by item.

    Updated Jul 16, 2026

Menu items live on the Menu page: every dish with its price, description, photo, dietary tags, and options. Everything you save goes live on your public menu automatically within about 2 minutes.

    Add an item

    1. Open Menu in the sidebar and choose Add item.
    2. Give it a name (required) and a price.
    3. Add a description — one or two appetizing sentences work best.
    4. Pick its category (create categories first — see Categories and menu organization). You can add a second category if the dish belongs in two places, up to 2 per item.
    5. Optionally add a photo — see Item photos and image tools for the built-in cropping and background tools.
    6. Save. The item appears on your live menu within about 2 minutes.

    Dietary and allergen tags

Each item can carry dietary and allergen tags — 17 in total, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, spicy, dairy, egg, fish, crustaceans, peanuts, soybeans, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphites, lupin, and molluscs. Tags show on the item's card, and guests can filter the menu by them.

    Tip

Tag allergens consistently across the whole menu, not just on obvious dishes — guests with allergies rely on the filter showing everything that's safe for them. Ask your kitchen to review the tags once per season.

    Options: sizes, extras, add-ons

For dishes that come in variants, open Advanced options in the item editor:

    1. Create an option group — for example "Size" or "Extras".
    2. Add options inside it — "Small", "Large", "Extra cheese" — each with its own price difference (e.g. +2.00).
    3. Save. Guests see the choices on the item, with prices adjusting per option.

Option groups you've used before are suggested when you create new ones, so a "Size" group stays consistent across the menu.

    Availability: your daily on/off switch

Every item has an Available switch — in the item editor and directly in the item list. Switch a dish off when the kitchen runs out ("86'd"), and it vanishes from the public menu until you switch it back. This is the tool for daily reality; deleting is only for dishes that are gone for good.

    Finding items fast

The Menu page has a grid/list view toggle, search, a category filter, an availability filter, and sorting by name, price, or last update. For changing many items at once — prices, descriptions, availability — use the bulk tools instead of opening items one by one: see Bulk edit and CSV import.

    Best practices

    • Write descriptions for appetite, not inventory. "Slow-roasted tomatoes, basil, buffalo mozzarella" beats "Tomato salad with cheese".
    • Price every item. Items without believable prices erode trust in the whole menu.
    • Keep names short. Long names wrap awkwardly on phones — put detail in the description.
    • Use availability, not deletion, for seasonal dishes — you keep the photo, translations, and options for next season.

    Troubleshooting

    • I can't add another item. You've reached your plan's item limit (10 on Free, 200 on Pro). Upgrading on the Billing page raises it immediately — see Plans and upgrading.
    • My new item isn't on the menu. Check its Available switch and give the menu about 2 minutes to refresh — see Why isn't my menu updating?.
    • The item shows in the wrong section. Edit the item and check its category — and remember category order is set on the Categories page, not per item.
